The 2013 DH Season is Open!9th MAY 2013

It's always fun to race at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey to kick off the season. Steve Peat absolutely railed his Bronson in the slalom taking 2nd place to Jared Graves! Greg MInnaar rode his V-10 to a 5th place podium spot in the downhill. Cedric Gracia joined Josh Bryceland and the boys for lots of laughs and fun all week on their pimping new assortment of Santa Cruz bikes.

The highlight of the weekend was Peaty’s outstanding performance in the slalom. He met up with teammate Bryceland in the 2nd round, Josh took a spill and Steve advanced to face off with Mick Hannah, the number one qualifier. Steve and Mick both had perfect runs and Steve emerged the victor from the match up to advance. He now raced Cameron Cole and they were pushing so hard that the both crashed at the same time digging deep into a berm. Steve got up the fastest and on to the finish line to have a big margin over Cam in the second run, where Steve advanced. Loading onto the truck for the final match up Jared Graves said, “This is the first time I’ve been nervous to race a 40 year old!” With the crowd cheering loudly for Steve, he did well in the match up, but Graves’s gate snap was too much to overcome on the last run, Graves took the win.

On the downhill the next day Greg chose to ride his carbon V-10. He said, “I made the right choice for me. I haven’t been riding my V-10 much yet this year and I wanted to get up to speed on it. I was happy I did and pleased that I grabbed the last podium spot, and that I was so close in time to Gwinny.” Steve also had a powerful performance, particularly after expending a lot on the slalom the day before and he placed 8th. It was one of Josh’s better Sea Otter attempts as he placed 17th, and Cedric placed 15th.

Steve says, “Sea Otter was good to me this year!! I have not been to Sea Otter for the last few years so it was great to be back racing in the USA. I have spent a lot of time racing over here so its awesome to catch up with loads of people. I chose to ride my new Santa Cruz Bronson Carbon with 27.5 wheels for both slalom and downhill. It turned out to be the right choice for me! Slalom was so fun to ride and race and I felt great on the bike! I ended up taking 2nd place and couldn't believe how much the crowd got behind me, thanks guys!!

The downhill was also good for me. I was a little tired from the dual slalom sprints, but managed a solid 8th place, less than 2 seconds back of the winner. The weekend was great fun and it feels good to start the season off well. Thanks to Ratboy, Greg and CG for the fun times in practice, and all at Santa Cruz for the wicked support, especially Kathy, Dougie and Marshy. Cheers guys!!!”

All and all Sea Otter Classic was a great outing for the Santa Cruz riders and capped off a busy week of festivities at Santa Cruz factory grand opening party, media rides and sponsor meetings. With the season officially underway we are ready to go racing!
